  • Fresh produce from our community garden is prepared for our healthy school lunch program.
  • Our students love fresh fruit and have a choice of fresh fruits daily on our salad bar.

Council School District is committed to serving healthy school lunches. In 2010, after being inspired by Jamie Oliver's Food Revolutionand taking notice of the quality and ingredients in the kinds of meals we were serving our students, CSD completely overhauled our school meals. The majority of our meals are fresh and unprocessed, including fresh fruits and vegetables and unprocessed meats. Students are eating healthier meals, and we have noticed a decrease in daily food waste.

All CSD students can have all the fresh fruits and vegetables they want from our daily salad bar. Seasonally, we utilize fresh vegetables and fruit from our community garden as a side to our lunches, to make fresh salsa, and to stock our salad bar. The bounty from the garden includes cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, carrots, onions, peppers, melons, herbs and more. Parents and community members have an open invitation to come and enjoy our fresh meals at a reasonable cost.

Our meal program supports our 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) district policy by providing a milk dispenser in place of single serving milk cartons. Students enjoy fresh, cold milk in a reusable, washable cup which reduces waste. Lunch trays and silverware are reusable and washable. Single serving food items are avoided at CSD, and we are a no polystyrene zone. Daily food waste is used as compost at the community garden or by our local farmers.
